Barn Climate Control

WHAT IS HEAT STRESS?

Cow milk production is optimal between 0-20ºC. When the temperature and air humidity exceeds the index THI 72 /temperature humidity index/, your cows are exposed to heat stress. In Slovakia, we count on heat stress at temperatures over 26ºC (i.e. 27ºC air temperature and 30% air humidity). If air humidity is higher in barns, a lower temperature can cause heat stress to the dairy cattle.

IMPACT OF HEAT STRESS

  • Reduction of feed intake
  • Impairs substance exchange
  • Increases a body water drop through breathing
  • Concentration of hormones changes
  • Body temperature increases
  • Loss of body weight
  • Milk production drops
  • Reproductive performance is affected

Heat stress has long-term negative impacts. Decreased milk production can be recorded up to 6 months after the heat stress is over!!!

WE HAVE SOLUTIONS:

We reduce heat stress in stall barns and other areas for cows using Schaefer fans (www.schaeferfan.com) and Edstrom (USA) water sprinklers system for cooling the air and the cattle.
